Open Evening

Carbrooke Heritage Group will be holding an Open Evening at the Village Hall on Friday 13th February 7 – 9pm. With Bar.

Whether it is ancient, medieval, agricultural, social, family, military, or natural history,  Carbrooke has it all.

Come along and find out more about Carbrooke and the locality. There has been human habitation here since neolithic times, with a Carbrooke heyday during medieval years when the largest Commanderie in Norfolk operated by the Knights Hospitallers was located here.

RAF Watton and World War 2 impacted the area when thousands of American servicemen arrived, followed by British RAF personnel during the Cold War.

In recent years the demographics has changed beyond all imagination.

Carbrooke Heritage Group is an informal group, based in the Heritage portacabin at the village hall.

We have produced various publications, put on talks and events relating to local heritage and helped at local events, new members,  ideas or suggestions as to meeting days and times welcome.

If you cannot make the date but would like to be involved, please contact –[email protected] or visit our website

Carbrooke Plough

It’s great to see the Carbrooke Plough back on its plinth outside Carbrooke Village Hall 2024

It was originally cast at Carbrooke foundry many years ago, and renovated by prisoners at Wayland prison, before being placed on its plinth in 2012.

After 10 years open to the elements, it was beginning to deteriorate, and has now had its wood work replaced and a re-paint of the ironwork by a Carbrooke resident.
Many thanks to all concerned.

Old photos on display, and if you have any photos or artefacts to show, we would love to see them. Please also let anyone else who may be interested know about it too.

We also have great news as we look to create a permanent heritage centre in the portacabin behind the village hall, and invite you to take a look at our plans.

The Heritage Group host ‘Tea & Memories’

Thankyou to all who supported, and those who helped with catering, and setting up. The morning weather was not looking too promising, but later in the afternoon the sun came out. We had lots of visitors both long standing and newer residents. Photos and other memorabilia were on display to get us all chatting together about Carbrooke in days gone by.

Cataloguing

Ongoing

Alternate Fridays in the Village Hall 2 – 4pm

5th August, 19th August,

We had a very successful afternoon, as we made a start on logging our memorabilia.

We managed to sort into different subject categories, although some of the items were difficult to decide which category it should belong in.

We all agreed it was great to actually get down to some Carbrooke heritage, and were surprised at quite how much we had collected over the years. I think we also got sidetracked by some of our findings!

  • Church & Chapel
  • School
  • Agriculture
  • Places & People
  • Social Life
  • RAF, War and Remembrance
  • Books & Publications

Our next cataloguing date will be

Friday 8th July 2-4pm

Carbrooke Village Hall.

We will concentrate on one of the categories to itemise, protect and preserve the memorabilia, before moving on to the .

Tea & biscuits to keep us going.

All welcome to help.
