For Carbrooke
Census’ have been taken in Britain every 10 years since 1801, (except 1941) some of the pre 1841, are still available to research, although the information is very basic.The census’ show us who lived where, family relationships, occupations, and age. The census have become more detailed as the years have passed. Some of the older documents can be difficult to decipher. The ‘hundred year rule’ means we are only able to access the census’ over 100 years old. The 1921 census has just been released on a pay per view basis.
Although there was no census taken in 1941, the government arranged a Register of Britains inhabitants in 1939, mainly to judge numbers available for military call up, or war work. It was also used to help recognise requirements for the set up of the 1948 National Health Service. The register is available for reference, including a list of name, age, address and occupation of all those alive on 7th October 1939. Most records for those still living are closed. Subsequent name changes, such as for marriage are noted, and other later comments are included.
